The 14 traditional Yoni symbols across the 27 stars
Across the 27 birth stars, classical tables assign 14 animal symbols (typically pairing two stars per symbol, with one symbol assigned to a single star in the 27-star list): Horse (Ashwa: Ashwini, Shatabhisha), Elephant (Gaja: Bharani, Revati), Sheep/Goat (Mesha: Krittika, Pushya), Serpent (Sarpa: Rohini, Mrigashira), Dog (Shwana: Ardra, Mula), Cat (Marjara: Punarvasu, Ashlesha), Rat/Mouse (Mushika: Magha, Purva Phalguni), Cow (Gau: Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Bhadrapada), Buffalo (Mahisha: Hasta, Swati), Tiger (Vyaghra: Chitra, Vishakha), Deer (Mriga: Anuradha, Jyeshtha), Monkey (Vanara: Purva Ashadha, Shravana), Mongoose (Nakula: Uttara Ashadha) and Lion (Simha: Purva Bhadrapada, Dhanishta).
Like Gana categories, these animal names are ancient mnemonic symbols used to classify stars into a 14×14 compatibility matrix—never a literal description of anyone’s personality or behaviour.
How the classical 0-to-4 Yoni matrix is graded
In the classical Ashtakoota matrix, two stars sharing the exact same Yoni symbol receive the maximum 4 of 4 points. Friendly Yoni pairs receive 3 points, neutral pairs receive 2 points, unfriendly pairs receive 1 point, and the seven traditional opposite (Swabhava Vairam) pairs receive 0 points.
For the ten-porutham checklist, Pairutham evaluates Yoni Porutham using the unadjusted classical award: a classical Yoni score of 2, 3 or 4 out of 4 is marked Pass, while a classical score of 0 or 1 is marked Caution.
Why Pairutham’s 36-point display and Yoni Porutham label can differ
As documented in our Porutham vs Guna Milan guide, regional South Indian tables often soften a 1-point Yoni award to a moderate 2 points in the 36-point display. Pairutham includes that Tamil-oriented 1-to-2 display adjustment in the Ashtakoota koota table, while keeping the Yoni Porutham Pass/Caution check strictly anchored to the pre-adjustment classical score.
That means a pair with a classical 1-point Yoni award will show 2/4 (moderate) in the Ashtakoota table and Caution in the ten-porutham list, whereas a pair with a classical 2-point neutral award shows 2/4 and Pass. Naming both rules openly prevents an adjusted points display from silently inflating the porutham pass count.
Putting a Yoni Caution into perspective
In Tamil marriage matching, Yoni is weighed alongside Ganam, Rasi, Rasi Athipathi, Vasiyam and Rajju. Many family astrologers treat supportive Moon-sign harmony (Rasi and Rasi Athipathi) and Rajju Pass as far more decisive than an unfriendly Yoni pair.
For the couple, Yoni Porutham is simply an invitation to talk openly about affection, personal space, rest habits and how both partners help each other feel comfortable at home.

Questions families ask
What does Yoni Porutham check in marriage matching?
Yoni Porutham compares the symbolic animal categories (14 Yonis across the 27 nakshatras) of both partners’ birth stars to assess traditional instinctive and personal rapport.
Why can Yoni show 2 out of 4 points but Caution in the porutham list?
In Pairutham’s Tamil-oriented Ashtakoota display, a classical 1-point Yoni pair is shown as a moderate 2/4 points, while the Yoni Porutham Pass/Caution status uses the unadjusted classical score (requiring at least 2 classical points to Pass).
Is Yoni Porutham mandatory if Rajju and Rasi pass?
Most Tamil family astrologers treat Rajju, Dinam, Ganam, Rasi and Rasi Athipathi as higher-priority checks and review the whole chart pattern rather than rejecting a match over Yoni alone.
