The 27-star reference table
The number column follows the traditional sequence of 27 stars, starting with Ashwini as one. Locate each partner’s row by either name, then compare the Rajju entries and the Vedhai partner column. The table is a reference for those two checks; a complete comparison also needs the other poruthams.

Start with the correct birth star
A birth star refers to the Moon’s nakshatra at the recorded birth moment. A familiar family name for the star can be helpful, but confirm that it belongs to the same person and chart you are entering. Similar spellings on different websites do not necessarily represent different stars. Pairutham shows both its Sanskrit and Tamil labels so the family can recognise the entry.
For example, Krittika appears here as Karthigai, while Dhanishta appears as Avittam. Chitra and Chithirai occupy the same row. Use the sequence number as a second check when a spelling differs. Do not shift a row merely because another chart uses a different transliteration: compare the sequence and the star identity first.
Read the Rajju column
Rajju divides these stars among five groups: Pada, Kati, Nabhi, Kantha and Siro. Some tables call Nabhi Udara. Find the group in each partner’s row. Pairutham applies a simple same-group check: matching groups receive Caution, while different groups receive Pass. The column does not award points or distinguish a stronger Pass from a weaker one.
Rajju is traditionally treated as one of the most important checks, concerning the strength of the marital bond. Regional Rajju tables differ; some add ascending and descending direction or apply exceptions. This reference deliberately shows Pairutham’s simple grouping. If a family astrologer gives a different interpretation, ask which additional convention explains the difference before assuming either table has been entered incorrectly.
Read the Vedhai column
The Vedhai column names the paired star in Pairutham’s method. A pair works in both directions: Ashwini lists Jyeshtha and Jyeshtha lists Ashwini. When the two entered stars form one of these pairs, Vedhai is Caution. If they do not, Vedhai is Pass. You can use the reverse row to confirm that you have read the right partner.
Chitra has “None in Pairutham’s table” in this column. All three Siro Rajju stars—Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta—form a traditional three-way group in many regional panchanga tables, whereas Pairutham’s 13-pair Vedhai table pairs Mrigashira with Dhanishta and leaves Chitra unpaired for Vedhai (since any combination among those three already receives a Siro Rajju Caution). An empty partner here is therefore a statement about Pairutham’s table; other traditions may pair Chitra as well.
What the chart can tell you
Two rows are enough to inspect Rajju and Vedhai, but they do not provide all ten poruthams or the complete 36-point Ashtakoota calculation. Moon signs and their rulers enter other checks. The inclusive star count enters directional poruthams. A table that reduces the whole comparison to one coloured cell may hide these distinctions. Read the components before comparing its overall label with Pairutham.
Avoid counting repeated labels as repeated evidence about the relationship. A star contributes to several traditional checks, and those checks can describe related themes through different rules. One Caution does not cancel every supportive component. Equally, a collection of Pass results does not replace a conversation about how the couple wants to organise their shared future.
A practical way to compare family notes
Write down the two star names in both naming systems, then note the two Rajju groups and whether the Vedhai partner matches. Keep these facts separate from the interpretation someone gives them. This makes it easier to ask a precise question, such as whether a regional exception is being applied, without turning a difference in tables into a disagreement about the couple.
If the birth time is uncertain, use the closest documented record and keep that uncertainty attached to the result. Near a star boundary, a change in the recorded moment can change the row you need. Checking the input is a useful first step whenever two calculations appear to refer to different stars. The free snapshot shows your stars, the overall score and how many poruthams pass; the full report names each one.
