How the 27-star count and division by nine work
In classical Tamil matching and the Ashtakoota Tara koota, the 27 nakshatras are arranged in three cycles of nine stars (paryayas). To evaluate Dinam, an astrologer counts inclusively from one partner’s nakshatra to the other’s through the 27-star sequence and divides that count by 9.
The remainder (from 1 to 8, or 9 when divisible by 9) identifies the Tara category: Janma (1), Sampat (2), Vipat (3), Kshema (4), Pratyak (5), Sadhaka (6), Vadha (7), Mitra (8) and Parama Mitra (9/0). Traditionally, remainders of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9 (0) are treated as supportive, while remainders of 3, 5 and 7 (and often 1 unless qualified by pada or star exceptions) are treated as unsupportive in that counting direction.

One-way vs two-way counting in Tamil vs Ashtakoota tables
One of the most common reasons two websites show different Tara or Dinam scores is how they handle directional counting. In North Indian Ashtakoota guna milan, the count is run in both directions—from partner one to partner two (worth up to 1.5 points) and from partner two to partner one (worth up to 1.5 points)—for a maximum of 3 points.
In traditional Tamil family matching, a single supportive direction is widely treated as sufficient to satisfy Dina Porutham. Pairutham follows this Tamil-family-oriented convention: when the underlying library awards 1.5 Tara points (meaning one direction is supportive), Pairutham completes the Dina check, displays 3 of 3 Tara points, and marks Dina / Nakshatra Porutham as Pass. Dinam is marked Caution only when neither counting direction is supportive (0 points).
Traditional 27th-star and pada nuances
When two charts fall in the exact same Rasi or when the star count reaches 27 (for example, counting across adjacent padas of a shared or split-sign nakshatra), classical Tamil manuals add further fine-grained rules based on which partner’s star comes first in the zodiac sign. Different regional almanacs in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Jaffna vary on which of those sub-rules they enforce.
Rather than hiding those regional variations behind an opaque yes or no, Pairutham shows both partners’ exact nakshatras, padas and Moon signs alongside the Dinam Pass or Caution label. If your family astrologer applies a specific 27th-star or pada rule, you can inspect the exact star numbers together in seconds.
How to discuss a Dina Porutham Caution
Even though Dinam is listed first among the ten poruthams, a Caution in Dinam does not automatically end a match discussion. Many families look at Dinam alongside Ganam, Rajju, Rasi and Rasi Athipathi to see the overall pattern of support across the chart.
In practical terms, Dinam invites a couple to talk about their everyday routine: how they manage work schedules, share household responsibilities, support each other during busy weeks and keep daily communication warm.

Questions families ask
What is Dina Porutham in English?
Dina Porutham (Dinam) is the first of the ten Tamil marriage matching checks. It counts the distance between the couple’s birth stars, divides by 9 (the Tara cycle), and checks whether the star relationship is supportive for everyday rhythm and companionship.
How does Pairutham grade Dina Porutham?
Pairutham uses the Tamil-oriented Tara convention: if at least one counting direction between the two nakshatras is supportive, Tara awards 3 of 3 points and Dina / Nakshatra Porutham is marked Pass. If neither direction is supportive (0 points), it is marked Caution.
Why does another site show 1.5 out of 3 for Tara when Pairutham shows 3?
Standard Ashtakoota tables award 1.5 points for each supportive counting direction between the two stars. Because Tamil porutham practice treats one supportive direction as completing Dinam, Pairutham awards the full 3 Tara points and marks Dinam Pass when one direction is supportive.
