Why sharing a birth star triggers Rajju and Nadi
Every nakshatra is assigned to one of the five Rajju groups (Pada, Kati, Nabhi, Kantha or Siro) and one of the three Nadi categories (Adi, Madhya or Antya). When both partners have the same nakshatra, both charts fall in the exact same Rajju group and the same Nadi.
In Pairutham’s published table rules, sharing a Rajju group produces a Caution for Rajju porutham, and sharing a Nadi awards zero of 8 points in the Ashtakoota Nadi koota. Because Vedhai only pairs distinct stars against each other, two identical stars never form a Vedhai pair. Understanding that mechanics keeps the discussion grounded in clear rules rather than mystery.
Traditional star exceptions in Tamil practice
Classical Tamil panchanga traditions do not treat all 27 nakshatras identically when both partners share a star. Many family astrologers recognise specific stars as supportive or permissible for Eka Nakshatra matching—most commonly Rohini, Ardra (Thiruvathirai), Pushya (Poosam), Magha (Magam), Vishakha (Visakam), Shravana (Thiruvonam), Uttara Bhadrapada (Uthirattathi) and Revati (Revathi).
Other stars are sometimes grouped as moderately acceptable when the padas differ, while stars that span two Moon signs (such as Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada) receive careful attention depending on which Rasi each partner’s Moon occupies.
How pada and Rasi differences change the reading
Each nakshatra is divided into four quarters called padas (1, 2, 3 and 4). Even when two people share a birth star, being born in different padas places the Moon in different Navamsa signs, and for nine of the 27 stars a different pada can also place the Moon in the neighbouring Rasi.
In many regional conventions, Eka Nakshatra pairs with different padas—especially when the groom’s and bride’s padas follow the traditional order preferred by that lineage—are read far more favourably than two charts sharing both the same star and the same pada. Pairutham shows each person’s exact nakshatra, pada, Moon sign and Navamsa placements so your family astrologer has the exact inputs needed to apply their pada rules.
How Pairutham grades a same-star match
Pairutham keeps its automated table check transparent and reproducible: because both partners share a Rajju group, the Rajju row is marked Caution rather than silently overridden by one regional exception list. At the same time, Rasi, Rasi Athipathi, Vasiyam, Yoni and Ganam often score strongly when two people share a star and Moon sign.
When you review a same-nakshatra report with parents, point first to the shared star and the two padas, then note which supportive poruthams pass alongside the Rajju Caution. Taking the two padas and Moon degrees to your family astrologer turns a blanket doubt into a clear, verifiable question about your family’s tradition.

Questions families ask
Can two people with the same nakshatra get married?
In many Tamil traditions, yes—depending on which nakshatra is shared and whether the two partners were born in different padas. Stars such as Rohini, Ardra, Pushya, Magha, Vishakha, Shravana, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati are widely cited as traditional exceptions.
Why does Pairutham show Rajju Caution for the same nakshatra?
Each star belongs to one of the five Rajju groups, so two identical stars always fall in the same group. Pairutham applies the direct same-group table rule and displays both padas so your family astrologer can apply regional Eka Nakshatra exceptions transparently.
Does having different padas matter for same nakshatra marriage?
Yes. Each nakshatra has four padas, and different padas place the Moon in different Navamsa signs (and for dual-sign stars, sometimes different Moon signs). Family astrologers routinely check the exact pada pair when reviewing a same-star match.
