Which nakshatras belong to Deva, Manusha and Rakshasa Gana
Every birth star belongs to one of the three Ganas, with nine nakshatras in each category. The nine Deva Gana stars are Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana and Revati. The nine Manusha Gana stars are Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada and Uttara Bhadrapada.
The nine Rakshasa (also called Asura) Gana stars are Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha. Despite the dramatic Sanskrit names, these labels are traditional symbolic groupings of star temperament—never a moral judgement about a person’s character, kindness or maturity.

How Pairutham grades Gana Porutham
In the 36-point Ashtakoota system, Gana carries a maximum of 6 points. When both partners belong to the same Gana (Deva–Deva, Manusha–Manusha or Rakshasa–Rakshasa), the pair receives the full 6 points. When one partner is Deva and the other is Manusha, the classical table awards 5 or 6 points depending on direction.
Pairutham maps the Gana koota score directly to three clear porutham statuses: a score of 4 or more out of 6 is marked Pass; a positive intermediate score below 4 is marked Partial; and a score of 0 (which occurs in classical tables when Rakshasa is paired with Deva or Manusha in an unsupported direction) is marked Caution.
Traditional exceptions when Gana Porutham is Caution
Because a Deva–Rakshasa or Manusha–Rakshasa pairing is very common statistically (affecting roughly four out of nine cross-group combinations), traditional Tamil and Vedic texts list well-known mitigating factors. First, if Rasi Porutham (Moon-sign distance) and Rasi Athipathi Porutham (friendship between the Moon-sign rulers) are supportive, many family astrologers treat Gana differences as secondary.
Second, some Tamil manuals note that when the two birth stars are separated by more than 14 nakshatras in the counting sequence, or when Vasiyam and Graha Maitri are strong, the practical friction suggested by different Ganas is softened. Pairutham shows all of those companion checks on the same page so you never read Ganam in isolation.
What Gana Porutham means for a modern couple
Read constructively, Gana Porutham asks how two people with different paces and instincts make space for each other. One partner may prefer harmony and gradual consensus, while the other values directness, quick action and outspoken debate.
Naming that difference early helps a couple treat contrasting styles as complementary strengths rather than personal slights—agreeing on how they will voice disagreement, host extended family and make joint decisions.

Questions families ask
Does Rakshasa Gana mean a person has a bad temperament?
No. Deva, Manusha and Rakshasa are traditional symbolic classifications of the 27 birth stars (nine stars in each group). Modern astrologers interpret Rakshasa Gana as independent, decisive or direct—never as a character flaw.
Can a Deva Gana and Rakshasa Gana couple marry?
Yes. While classical tables award 0 Gana points and Pairutham marks Gana Caution to keep the table rule transparent, family astrologers routinely check whether Rajju, Rasi, Rasi Athipathi and Vasiyam pass, and whether the star distance exceeds 14 nakshatras.
How does Pairutham assign Pass, Partial and Caution for Ganam?
Pairutham marks Gana Porutham as Pass when the Gana koota awards 4 or more out of 6 points, Partial when it awards a positive score below 4, and Caution when it awards 0 points.
