Two ways traditions define Vasiyam: Rasi pairs vs Vashya groups

In classical Tamil tables, each Moon sign (Rasi) has one or two designated Vasiya signs—for example, Mesha lists Simha and Vrischika; Rishaba lists Kataka (the fourth sign) and Thula; Mithuna lists Kanni; Kataka lists Vrischika and Dhanusu; Simha lists Thula; Kanni lists Mithuna and Meena; Thula lists Makara and Kanni; Vrischika lists Kataka; Dhanusu lists Meena; Makara lists Mesha and Kumbha; Kumbha lists Mesha; and Meena lists Makara.

In the 36-point Ashtakoota system, the twelve signs (and degrees within Dhanusu and Makara) are grouped into five traditional Vashya classifications—Chatushpada (quadruped), Manava/Dwipada (human/biped), Jalachara (water), Vanachara (wild/forest) and Keeta (Scorpio)—and scored from 0 to 2 points according to whether the two groups match or influence each other.

How Pairutham grades Vasiyam Porutham

Pairutham links its Vasiyam Porutham status to the 2-point Vashya koota so the ten-porutham table and the 36-point Ashtakoota table remain mathematically consistent on the report page. When Vashya awards the full 2 points, Vasiyam is marked Pass; when Vashya awards a positive partial score below 2 (such as 0.5 or 1 point), Vasiyam is marked Partial; and when Vashya awards 0 points, Vasiyam is marked Caution.

Upstream Ashtakoota libraries often label Vashya pairs using gendered “Boy / Girl” strings. Pairutham rewrites those labels with the two partners’ actual names so the breakdown reads naturally and respectfully for every couple.

Why Vasiyam is a secondary supportive check

Whether you use the Tamil Rasi-pair list or the Ashtakoota Vashya groups, only a minority of the 144 possible Moon-sign combinations achieve a full Vasiyam match. For that reason, family astrologers treat a Pass or Partial in Vasiyam as an encouraging bonus—especially when Rasi Porutham or Rasiyathipathi needs a closer look—and never treat a Vasiyam Caution as a standalone obstacle when Rajju, Dinam and Ganam are supportive.
