The exact star-count rule: 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 or 25
Mahendram is calculated by counting inclusively from partner two’s birth star (as 1) forward through the 27-nakshatra cycle to partner one’s birth star. If that inclusive count lands on 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 or 25, Pairutham marks Mahendra Porutham as Pass. For any other count from 1 to 27, it is marked Caution; there is no Partial grade for this rule.
Notice the mathematical pattern: those eight numbers are the positions where counting in cycles of nine leaves a remainder of 4 or 7 (except 1, which is the shared star). Because only 8 out of the 27 possible star distances satisfy the rule, roughly 70 percent of random star pairs do not have Mahendram.
Why partner entry order matters for directional checks
Traditional Tamil astrologers count directional poruthams (such as Mahendram and Stree Deergham) starting from the bride’s nakshatra and ending at the groom’s nakshatra. Because Pairutham’s matching form is gender-neutral, it counts inclusively from the second partner entered in the form to the first partner entered.
If you are comparing Pairutham’s Mahendram label with a family astrologer’s worksheet, enter the bride as Partner Two and the groom as Partner One so the inclusive count runs in the exact same direction.
Why Mahendram is a supportive bonus rather than a gatekeeper
Because fewer than a third of all star combinations land on one of the eight Mahendram numbers, Tamil astrological tradition has never treated Mahendram as a mandatory gatekeeper on its own. Instead, when Mahendram is Pass, astrologers note it as a welcome supportive indicator, and when it is absent, they look to Rajju, Dinam, Ganam, Rasi and Rasi Athipathi.
Seeing Caution next to Mahendra in a report simply records that the inclusive star distance was not one of those eight numbers. It is a factual description of the star count, not a warning against the relationship.
How to bring Mahendram into a family conversation
When parents ask about Mahendram, showing the exact star count (and pointing out that only 8 of 27 counts qualify) immediately puts a Caution label in perspective. You can then shift the discussion toward the primary checks that do pass and how the couple plans to build their household, finances and family goals together.

Questions families ask
Which star counts give a Pass for Mahendra Porutham?
Counting inclusively from the second partner’s nakshatra (as 1) to the first partner’s nakshatra through the 27-star cycle, Mahendram is Pass when the count is 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 or 25.
Is Mahendra Porutham mandatory for marriage?
No. Because only 8 out of 27 possible star counts satisfy the rule, over two-thirds of couples will show Caution for Mahendram. Family astrologers treat it as a supportive bonus alongside primary checks such as Rajju, Vedhai, Dinam, Ganam and Rasi.
Does Mahendram add points to the 36-point Guna Milan score?
No. Mahendram is part of the Tamil ten-porutham system and is not one of the eight Ashtakoota kootas that make up the 36-point total.
