Stree Deergham Porutham in English: Star Distance & Exceptions

How the star distance rule works: 13+, 7 to 12, and below 7

Stree Deergham is read from the same inclusive nakshatra count used for Mahendram: start at partner two’s birth star as 1 and count forward through the 27 nakshatras to partner one’s birth star. Stree Deergham is traditionally associated with the bride’s wellbeing and a long married life.

Different Tamil manuals quote slightly different cut-offs: stricter texts ask for a count above 13 (14 through 27), while many practising astrologers accept any count above 7 (8 through 27) or 7 and above. Pairutham makes both thresholds visible by grading a count of 13 or more as Pass, a count of 7 through 12 as Partial, and a count below 7 (1 through 6) as Caution.

Checking partner order when comparing with an astrologer

Because Stree Deergham is a directional count around a 27-star circle, reversing the two partners flips a short distance into a long one (for any two distinct stars, the two directional counts add up to 29). Traditional Tamil practice counts from the bride’s star to the groom’s star.

Pairutham is gender-neutral and counts from Partner Two to Partner One. When you want to match a family astrologer’s directional convention, enter the bride as Partner Two and the groom as Partner One.

Traditional exceptions when the star distance is short

When the inclusive star count is below 7 (or between 7 and 12), family astrologers do not stop the review. First, notice that a count of 4 is a Pass for Mahendra Porutham even though it is below 7 for Stree Deergham; similarly, a count of 7 or 10 satisfies Mahendram while falling in Pairutham’s Partial band (7–12) for Stree Deergham.

Second, classical Tamil commentaries note that when Rasi Porutham, Rasi Athipathi Porutham and Rajju Porutham are supportive, a short Stree Deergham count is balanced by the wider chart. Showing Pass, Partial and Caution alongside those companion checks keeps the discussion balanced.

How to discuss Stree Deergham with family

In a modern conversation, the constructive theme behind Stree Deergham is mutual care, emotional security and ensuring both partners feel supported over the years. Sharing the exact star distance number and pointing to the Partial band (7–12) helps parents see whether a difference between two websites is simply a 7-star versus 13-star cut-off.

Questions families ask

How many stars apart is needed for Stree Deergham Porutham?

Counting inclusively from Partner Two’s nakshatra (as 1) to Partner One’s nakshatra, Pairutham grades a count of 13 or more as Pass, 7 through 12 as Partial (reflecting the common 7+ regional convention), and 1 through 6 as Caution.

Why does one website say Stree Deergham passes while another says Partial?

Some Tamil tables require the star count to be at least 13 (or 14), whereas others accept any count from 7 (or 8) upward. Pairutham uses Partial for counts 7–12 and Pass for 13+ so both conventions are clear.

What if Stree Deergham is Caution?

A short star distance (1 to 6) is one component among ten. Family astrologers check whether Mahendram passes (count 4), whether Rajju and Vedhai pass, and whether Rasi and Rasi Athipathi support the match.
